As it turns out, many of the known bugs with getting WiZ to work with the new releases are being worked as some Zip and UnZip DLL and LIB bugs are being reported and fixed. Maybe when Zip 3.1 and UnZip 6.0 get out it may be time to start updating WiZ to use them.
Actually, there's been a gui front end for Info-ZIP (and a slew of other archiving programs) called TkZip, that's been around since the mid 1990's. There's a link to the TkZip website on the Info-Zip pages that has been obsolete for several years.
One of the problems we run into in a volunteer development group like Info-ZIP is that the members and contributors that may have supported a particular port or utility eventually run out of spare time or move on and support for that port or utility has to be picked up by someone else or it just sits there. WiZ seems to be an example of this. We've had some user contributions recently addressing some compilation issues, but for the most part the WiZ utility has been unsupported. The few active developers have been focusing on Zip and UnZip, with the result that ever so sluggishly Zip 3.0 and then UnZip 6.0 finally made it out. The WiZ developer is around and provides some support, but really doesn't have the time to revamp WiZ.
We could definitely use some help in the Windows gui area, as currently we seem thin on active developers in that area. My "expertise," for instance, is in the Visual Basic area and the example code for the Zip 3.0 and UnZip 6.0 dlls seems to work reasonably (I think). I really don't know enough about Windows C gui development though to take up the revamping of WiZ without a large time commitment (time that could be used to do other Zip and UnZip development).
So that's the story on WiZ (as seen by this Info-ZIP member's point of view). If someone out there is willing to do some WiZ revamping, we'll provide priority support to help as we can. Otherwise, it could be awhile before WiZ gets to the top of the list and we pull out the Windows gui books and make an attempt.
By the way, it may be time to update WiZ to use more modern versions of the Windows tools and APIs, which I hear might greatly simplify the guts of WiZ.

I would appreciate it if someone would correct this page.
We're aware of TkZip, but haven't looked that way in some time. We'll do that and update at least the link. In particular, TkZip is the main reason we haven't looked at putting a Unix gui together. It's been done. There still is interest in making the libraries Unix compatible and there has been some recent work in that direction.
Also, if a fix or some key information gets posted and nothing happens, it's most likely that we missed it or got sidetracked and forgot it. So keep bugging us if it looks like we fell asleep. We plan to shortly start editing thread titles to help us keep track of threads that are essentially resolved and threads that we need to get to.

Erm.... Wake up! Wachet auf, ruft Euch die Stimme!
